6 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (March 27 - Results & Review)

Downs...

2. Weird Format

Best Friends The Kingdom
AEW

AEW is not yet in the phase of the promotional cycle that requires killer angles and puffed-chest go-home promos. Dynasty is still some weeks away. Still, the format of last night's Dynamite was a touch one-dimensional and repetitive. It was very action-heavy.

This is no bad thing necessarily, since that roster is so incredible, but a few more promos wouldn't have gone amiss. Quebec City only sounded like a proper AEW crowd during the main event; perhaps the tenor of the show would have really worked had the fans been more up for it.

Every promo was brief and held backstage. Elsewhere, between matches, AEW ran a series of video packages highlighting the strengths and recent activity of some key acts. That's hardly a bad thing in and of itself, but the tactic felt familiar and missable and achieved little, ultimately. It felt like a response to critics who aren't worth the response.

Beyond the match results, Dynamite was lacking in incident and hooks leading to next week's show. It didn't feel episodic.
