6 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Sept 11)
1. At Least Nobody Got Hurt...
Given the state of Brie Bella's last televised in-ring performance, her vs. Maryse could've been a disaster. The lesser twin almost broke her neck on two botched dives, and given that her opponent (for all her skill as a personality and valet) isn't exactly Meiko Satomura between the ropes, there'd be little protection in a straight-up one-on-one clash.
WWE didn't go down that route. Instead, they turned the bout into an overblown angle. A wise idea, but they layout and execution were both off.
Maryse took a powder as soon as the bell rang. She rolled back inside, but kept avoiding Brie, evading her time and time again. This saw Miz retorted a Bella rant by claiming she didn't belong in the same ring as his wife, then run down Brie and Bryan's claims of cowardice, before attempting a walk-out. The heels were eventually dragged back to the ring, but the set piece came to an end when Miz pulled Brie outside for a DQ finish (with Maryse tied in a Yes! Lock).
Contrived and overbooked, it ticked few of the intended boxes, though the post-"match" was solid enough. Brie and Bryan had their revenge on their dastardly foes and stood tall as the show went off the air, though it's hard to imagine anyone feeling more excited about their clash after this.
