6 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite: New Year's Smash (Dec 27 - Results & Review)

3. A PPV Quality Opener

Jon Moxley Swerve Strickland
AEW

What an opener, man.

The triple threat pitting Jon Moxley vs. Jay White vs. Swerve Strickland came across as a big time battle from the off, and it proved to be a top way to open this episode. The fact Swerve didn't take the decisive fall is very encouraging too; here's hope AEW has big, big plans for him in 2024.

Strickland has been on fire lately, and more is clearly coming. Besides, Jay White is a more established star on the upper decks and recently battled for the World Title, so he'll be fine. Personally, this guy would've went all the way and given the win to Swerve, but it is what it is and at least there's a natural story to tell with Mox and Eddie Kingston.

People always know they'll see some really good matches whenever they tune into AEW programming. However, this three way was a cut above even that. It was borderline pay-per-view quality from start to finish, and had stakes to boot.
