6 Ups & 4 Downs From Last Night's NXT (Jan 15)
3. Grizzled Young Veterans
Zack Gibson is WWE's most underutilized star. No @s please.
The man currently plies his trade on the company's least-watched brand and, when he does, he's forced to share the ring with at least 3 other men. His partner James Drake is wonderful, and the tag-teams he goes up against are a lot better than they're given credit for, but the man is peerless when put alone in the spotlight, and given a live microphone. Lo and behold, he cut the shows best promos in months.
Until he's finally afforded a singles run on NXT UK (or, sh*t, I don't know, NXT itself) we can only hope that he's at least allowed to excel as a team. Giving the Grizzled Young Veterans the huge scalp of knocking off Kushida and Alex Shelley is long-overdue recognition for good they actually are. Given the wave of excitement that greeted the reformation of the Time Splitters, this was a huge win.
The match itself was a million miles removed from the opening contest between Dunne, Riddle, Webster and Andrews, but it nonetheless had enough to keep a searing-hot crowd engaged as it built to one of NXT's biggest upsets since... well... Kushida's last match on the show. Getting beaten by Cameron Grimes in December last month.
