6 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE NXT Spring Breakin' (23 April - Results & Review)

1. Whoop That Trick!

Trick Williams
WWE

Throughout his meteoric rise in NXT, Trick Williams has been rightly described as a tremendously charismatic superstar who is still raw in the ring. If and when his wrestling catches up to his persona, he will be unstoppable.

At the same time, his popularity is undeniable, so tapping Trick as the next NXT Champion wasn’t some snap decision. Fortunately, Williams’ crowning achievement Tuesday at Spring Breakin’ happened to be his best match to date, with Ilja Dragunov providing a stiff, relentless opponent for Trick to slay.

The two didn’t waste any time with formalities or “soaking in the big moment,” nor did they go through some chain wrestling sequence to establish parity. They just flew into it with bombs – literally. Both men employed powerbombs, and Trick borrowed some of Ilja’s signature moves, including the H-Bomb and Torpedo Moscow.

The finish was a great callback to the ending of their Vengeance Day match, where Williams and Dragunov flew at each other in one last, desperate attack. On that day, Ilja’s Torpedo Moscow won the day, but Tuesday night, it was the Trick Shot that landed – flush – giving Williams the win and the title.

Here’s hoping for the best for Williams, who got the best possible send up in the biggest match of his young career.
