2. Doubting Gunther

Ever since Gunther lost to Cody Rhodes at Crown Jewel, WWE has been trying to show that the Ring General’s confidence was shaken, and Damian Priest was capitalizing on it.

The voyage to get to Monday’s go-home segment was a bit shaky, but Priest and Gunther managed to land the plane on Raw, with Gunther never uttering a word. The World Heavyweight Champion opened Raw, but before he could open his mouth, Priest came out to press the advantage and challenge the champion to call him out to his face. He suggested the pressure of being champion had gotten to him – and Damian knew what that pressure felt like.

Gunther either saw that his bravado wasn’t going to work, or he simply couldn’t muster it in this instance, so rather than respond, he attacked Priest. Damian quickly turned the tide and put Gunther through the announce desk with a Razor’s Edge, further casting doubt in the champ’s mind.

Realistically, Priest isn’t leaving Survivor Series with the world title, but the bigger story is how Gunther gets his groove back and overcomes this self-doubt. It’s not the most eloquent story, but it’s a more interesting wrinkle than Gunther just prattling on about being better than everyone. The proof of concept will come at Survivor Series and in the aftermath.
