1. When Celebrating A Countout Works

Chad Gable Gunther

Anyone making comparisons to Chad Gable celebrating a countout win over Gunther in his Intercontinental Championship match to Lex Luger doing the same in 1993 against Yokozuna isn’t making a good-faith argument.

Gable overcame a battering from Gunther to finally put the Ring General on his heels, pushing him with a few near-falls before the two battled outside the ring. Gunther chopped the post, and Gable pounced, shoving him into the post and then suplexing him over the barricade. He sprinted into the ring to beat the count and celebrated the win.

Here’s the thing though: Gable is the first wrestler to beat Gunther in one-on-one action since the Austrian debuted on the main roster. And his win was not his only title shot (Luger’s was a one-time-only match). Presumably, the Olympian can parlay that victory into a rematch for the title in the near future, something he made clear from the ramp moments later.

Gable earning the distinction of being the first person to have his arm raised in any singles match against Gunther should not be understated. That’s a great feather in his cap – if WWE portrays it that way and follows up beyond this singles program with the Ring General.
