6 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE Raw (May 2)

1. Mute Edge’s Mic

Judgement is in on Edge’s promos in his current incarnation, and he’s been found guilty of boring the crowd and devolving to the cheapest of heat.

Since unveiling this new character, Edge has taken to giving these wordy, Bray Wyatt-lite promos that just don’t hit at all. Then last week, he began sprinkling in a few lighthearted jabs at the crowd, the low-hanging fruit rookies rely on to get a reaction.

Monday night, we saw Edge go even further with this crutch, going right after the fans and mocking their ability to get dressed, walk and count high enough to find their seats. He called the town too insignificant to get a professional sports team, then called the fans lemmings – and then explained what a lemming is!

Finally, Edge turned to the fans facing the hard camera, and seeing a handful booing, full-on egged them on to boo him, encouraging them to finally react to him – which, to be fair, fans are almost always going to do.

It all just felt so lame and… well, pathetic. This guy was once a top star who could elicit a reaction without trying. Now, he’s calling fans rednecks, insulting sports teams and asking the fans to boo him – all while delivering objectively terrible promos.

There was some hope for Edge and this heel stable, but every week that goes by without a major course correction just makes it more difficult to salvage.
