6 Ups & 6 Downs From AEW Dynamite (Jul 29)

2. A Poor Hikaru Shida Match

Diamante Hikaru Shida
AEW

How do you have a poor match with Hikaru Shida? The Japanese star has been the leading in-ring light of AEW's inconsistent women's division since its inception. She has a proven track record of making lesser wrestlers look better, helping them to matches above their average rate of delivery, yet she and Diamante contrived to produce one of the stodgiest, most dysfunctional women's matches of recent times.

The frustrating thing about this is that Diamante is good too - they just underdelivered. Badly. This was a clash of sloppy, awkward exchanges, including a dreadful roll-around brawl that saw them tumbling around as if they were drunkenly trying to negotiate a pub floor. There was more later on, with a misplaced sunset flip planting part of Shida's body on the ropes, preventing the pin.

Jim Ross did a good job of covering for the sloppiness on commentary, suggesting Shida, like Cody, was distracted by something else. Still, this was below average.
