Welcome to the uneven build to WWE WrestleMania 39, where some storylines look fantastic, some are spectacles, and others are downright disasters-in-waiting.

Raw was a letdown, perhaps a lull in the middle of the build to the biggest show of the year. You did get a major setup for a major development, a title change, a challenge for a grudge match and an accepted challenge for a spectacle of a match. All of these were good moments that you’d expect at this stage of the Road to WrestleMania.

But you also have one of your biggest titleholders in a feud with no juice other than the match graphic promising to deliver a tremendous contest in a month. You’ve got a dismal women’s division where the midcard plays out to silence week after week. You’ve got two former world champions potentially in a feud that makes little sense and seems more poised to disappoint than wow. And you’ve got silliness with cell phones that just make you scratch your head a bit.

There’s obviously still plenty of time to get things back on track where necessary, but overall, this felt like a misfire disguised by a few good moments. Even the “meh” stuff should technically be judged harshly because of the time of year, when everyone’s game should be upped.

Let’s get to it…

He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
