6 Ups & 7 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Jan 3)

3. Big E Brings Sombre Passion

If you’re looking for a great example of why so many were crushed by Big E losing the WWE Championship at Day 1, look no further than his backstage promo Monday night.

E started off low and sombre, talking about how being champ meant a lot to him and two other people. He said there was no shame in losing to Brock, but that he wasn't going to wallow and instead was going to write the next chapter and take the next step to reclaim his title. As he said this, his voice rose and filled with fire is he finished by saying that he would be damned if there was a soul on earth who could stop him.

It was a pitch-perfect promo for someone who lost his title to a surprise opponent 48 hours earlier. He didn’t start out screaming, and he didn’t shrug it off and make a joke. That kind of realistic promo let you feel him, which is something that’s sorely lacking in today’s WWE.

He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
