6 Ups And 7 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Sept 26)

5. Rethinking The Cruiserweights

There's no getting around the worry that's already setting-in in the Cruiserweight division. WWE's reins are likely just a little too tight for the division to reach the stunning heights they hit in the Cruiserweight Classic, and the lack of microphone time is troubling, but despite these misgivings, last night's Raw definitely pushed things in the right direction.

Part of what made the CWC such a refreshing experience was the presentation. The swooping camera angles, purple ropes, incredible commentary, and "real sport" made it feel like a stark contrast to Raw and SmackDown. The CWC shows were so different, in fact, that it was hard to believe they came from WWE in the first place.

Last week's Raw saw WWE eschew much of what gave the CWC its identity, but they brought a few elements back this week. When the Cruiserweights took to the ring, they competed between the tournament's purple ropes, started with a pre-match handshake, and were given their own special ring mat. Little touches like this will go a long way to making the division stand-out, and establishing its own identity. To their credit, Raw's creative team were able to learn from last week's mistakes and make the necessary adjustments: long may it continue.
