Heading into No Mercy, fans would not have been surprised if either John Cena or Dean Ambrose resorted to underhanded tactics to win the WWE World Championship. After all, both men went after the other and champ AJ Styles in aggressive fashion, both with words and physicality.

But neither man stooped to that level, with Styles being the one to retrieve and use a chair to retain his title. While that was to be expected, it doesn’t mean that he should have been the only man to use a weapon. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but it would have added some spice and freshened things up if Cena or Ambrose had used the chair or another weapon to his advantage. We’re not talking about turning heel here, but even a little “shades of gray” would have added something.

Cena has toyed with this sort of thing before, and Ambrose’s character as a lunatic always seems just a step or two removed from reverting to a villainous persona. None of this means that the match was a disappointment, but it would have added a little more to it to give fans something of a twist, even if it was resolved on SmackDown two days later.
