6 WrestleMania Title Matches That Should Have Been Triple Threats

The winner of the 2011 40-man Royal Rumble match opened up WrestleMania 27, showing where this World Heavyweight Championship feud between Edge and Alberto Del Rio ranked in WWE’s priorities that year.

Creating a new main event talent out of a Rumble winner was a refreshing throwback concept - the four previous winners had been The Undertaker, John Cena, Randy Orton and Edge himself - to paint a picture of the usual stature of the victor - but there was nothing about his rivalry with ’The Rated-R Superstar' that made it feel as though Del Rio belonged in his class.

The Mexican was a gifted in-ring technician but he was only six months into his main roster run and had not had the time to establish himself as somebody worth caring about. He was little more than a gimmick to most fans, and a gimmick that they had seen at the top of the card only a few years prior with JBL.

The insertion of Christian (who had just returned from injury to save Edge from a Del Rio beatdown at Elimination Chamber) into the match would have added layers of fascinating backstory. ‘Captain Charisma’ did float around the feud but as a bit-part character, so much so that having him in Edge’s corner at WrestleMania felt a bit unnecessary. He should have played a much bigger role.

WWE may have been building to a summer angle between the former tag partners, but this turned out to be Edge’s last match before his career-ending neck injury, and we never got to see them have a true singles rivalry.
