6 WWE Records That Were Needlessly Broken

6. Shortest Time In The Royal Rumble Match - Santino Marella

Santino Marella might seem like the perfect man to hold such a record, and in truth his elimination from the 2009 Royal Rumble was so perfectly timed that it is difficult to grumble about. Santino hurtled down to the ring, only to be immediately clotheslined out of it by Kane.

Santino's one second stay in the Rumble beat the previous shortest time, a relatively lengthy two seconds, set by The Warlord in 1989. The Warlord's elimination wasn't dissimilar to Santino's, as he walked into the ring to be immediately met by his elimination at the hands of Hulk Hogan.

Well done or not, this record simply did not need to be beaten. By predictably throwing this unwanted record onto a comedy talent like Santino, it immediately lost any gravitas it may have had. It also guarantees that the record will never be broken again, removing a potential story point later in time.

The 2009 Royal Rumble didn't need this to happen, and as funny as it may have been at the time it seems somewhat pointless now. But hey, at least it means WWE doesn't need to have Hulk Hogan in the Royal Rumble video package now.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
