Although enjoying their spells at the top of Ring of Honor during separate eras in the company's history, Joe and Rollins clashed during the former's comeback at Rising Above 2008. Although billed as the return of a legend, Joe's appearance actually contributed towards Rollins' future rise to the top of the wrestling world. Although impressive, Rollins - then known as Tyler Black - was still seen as something of a young punk in the ultra-competitive ROH landscape. In refusing to submit to Joe's coquina clutch, choosing instead to pass out and lose the match in a far more honourable fashion, Rollins established himself as a tough guy worthy of his potential (much like Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13). This loss was undoubtedly a factor in Rollins winning the ROH Championship two short years later, a rise which made him a worldwide name on the independent scene, and evidently helped catch the eye of WWE scouts.
