The character of John Cena is boring because it's been the same thing for the majority of the last decade. We know he's out there catering to the kids in the audience, but in order for him to really evolve as a performer he needs to change things up in terms of how his character is presented. While a heel turn may never happen due to all of his charity work as well as his spot as WWE's top merchandise seller, it wouldn't be a bad idea because if it did take place that's the kind of thing that could really spark WWE business. If they don't want to turn him heel that's okay, but they should try to put him over as being more motivated than ever. Have him use the STF more often, but also have guys sell it like it's a bigger deal than it currently is. That makes Cena look tougher and shows that he's out there not just to win matches, but to also make a statement. The rumor is that WWE might go with Cena Vs. Reigns at WrestleMania. If they do, both guys are likely to be booed by the crowd, but that's okay. What matters is the way that Cena is presented. If he goes into that match looking stronger than ever then it will mean that much more if Reigns beats him. Cena may come back doing the same thing he has done so many times, but in order for WWE to change and improve, Cena has to change along with it.
