7 Cool Things About WWE Survivor Series 1990 (Not Named The Undertaker)

7. Grand Finale Match Of Survival

The Grand Finale Match of Survival was the main event of Survivor Series 1990 and it was a unique concept that has not been used since. The Survivor Series PPV began in November of 1987 and, through 1990, this yearly event consisted only of multi-man or multi-woman elimination tag matches. It wasn't until 1991 when the event would showcase the first ever non-elimination tag match when, coincidentally enough, The Undertaker would challenge Hulk Hogan for the WWF Championship in what would be billed as The Gravest Challenge. For the 1990 event, the WWF promoted an additional match that would take place at the end of the evening and would feature all of the survivors from the babyface teams and pitted them against the survivors from the heel teams. This main event would ultimately see the WWF's top two babyfaces, the WWF Champion Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan, team with Tito Santana to take on the team of the Million Dollar Man, "The Model" Rick Martel, The Warlord, and Power & Glory (Hercules and Paul Roma). This concept had some legs and could have been used in future years to do some pretty interesting things, creatively speaking. For example, while it would have made little sense given their history, could Ted DiBiase have chosen to team with Hogan, Warrior and Santana if he wanted? Prior to the match taking place, it was never mentioned how the Grand Finale teams would be determined. In other words, the WWF did not say that all of the surviving "good guys" would face the surviving "bad guys" as this was not the way the WWF presented things at the time. Heels and babyfaces were never mentioned in those terms. As the years progressed and the elimination tag gimmick of the Survivor Series had run its course, the Grand Finale Match of Survival could have been used to breathe new life into the PPV. Perhaps we could have seen some interesting teams formed if they were to evolve the idea, and it would have created a great opportunity for some character role reversals. The 1995 Survivor Series did include a Wild Card elimination tag match in which heels and babyfaces were on the same teams, but the Grand Finale Match of Survival was an idea that probably could have been brought back again, but for whatever reason, was left in the closet.
