7 Huge Mistakes WWE Made With Chris Jericho's Debut Year
7. WrestleMania Debut Was A Disappointment
The WrestleMania debut of Jericho was a disappointment even though he was wrestling against great workers like Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit, both of whom were making their WrestleMania debut as well. It was at a time when WWE was overdoing Triple Threat matches and at that show there weren't any singles matches aside from a divas match that really meant nothing. In his second book, Jericho talked about his disappointment in the match. It's because it was very confusing with Angle walking in as the Intercontinental & European Champion. They put both titles on the line in the match in separate falls. Angle ended up losing both of them with Jericho leaving as the European Champion. You would think that would be a big deal to win a title at his first WrestleMania, but the next night on Raw, Jericho lost the Euro Title to Eddie Guerrero and it proved that the WrestleMania storyline was pretty meaningless after all. It's not like it was a bad match. It was fine. They just didn't do a good job of building up the story in an entertaining way. It was as if they said "let's put three good workers in a match and hope for the best," which is lazy booking. Following WrestleMania 16, Jericho really started to hit his stride thanks to his feud with Benoit and also Triple H although that wasn't all greatness either. More on that one later.
