7 Most Notorious Randy Savage Urban Legends

4. Savage Wasn't Supposed To Win WWE Title At WrestleMania IV

Story: At WrestleMania IV, 'Macho Man' Randy Savage captured the WWF Heavyweight Title for the very first time. An interminable 14-man tournament had been held. but was capped off with a memorable coronation of Savage to end the show. Fans hadn't really reacted to many of the bouts in the tournament, but they sure went nuts when Randy defeated Ted DiBiase to bag the gold. As it turns out, this wasn't always the plan. The first draft for 'Mania called for DiBiase to leave with his hand raised as champion. From there, the 'Million Dollar Man' would engage in a feud against Hulk Hogan. For his part, Savage was supposed to face The Honky Tonk Man for the WWF Intercontinental Title. Those plans were shelved when Honky refused to lose to Randy. Why People Believe It: It would have made sense for DiBiase to win the belt and face Hogan at a later date. Earlier in 1988, Andre The Giant had seemingly won the title from Hogan only so he could hand it to Ted. The subsequent tournament was a result of the WWF Title being vacated by management. Should We Believe It: There's a decent chance DiBiase was initially considered for the top prize, but nobody can have any arguments against the idea that Randy Savage would make a fine champion. As for Honky Tonk Man refusing to lose to Savage, that's a little harder to swallow. At SummerSlam later that year, Honky lost to The Ultimate Warrior in just over 30 seconds. Why would he agree to that, yet balk at the idea of putting Savage over?
