7 Most Surprising WWE PPV Main Eventers Ever
6. Hardcore Holly - December To Dismember 2006
Speaking of lifetime midcarders thrust into the main event scene, it's Hardcore Holly! Now I must confess that I rather enjoyed the work of the former Sparky Plug, in all of its hard-nosed smashmouth glory. But a main eventer he was not, as was demonstrated in his brief revenge-fuelled feud with Brock Lesnar in late 2003/early 2004.
Bombastic Bob was, amazingly, given a WWE Title shot at Brock at the 2004 Royal Rumble, but the match was placed firmly in the midcard and given all of six minutes. Holly then went right back down to the midcard, but his career would bounce back somewhat when he was transferred to WWE's relaunched ECW brand.
On the so-called 'C' show, Holly was given more of a chance to shine, contesting long and competitive matches with the likes of Rob Van Dam and CM Punk. Still, he wasn't considered a 'main eventer', much less a PPV main eventer, more of a grizzled veteran who could be depended on for a believable, hard-fought match.
Holly was thrown into the main event of WWE's only ECW pay-per-view, December to Dismember, though, when originally scheduled participant Sabu was removed due to bad backstage behaviour. Sabu's loss was Holly's gain, as he did battle with Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, Test, Bobby Lashley and Big Show.
Because of the fact he was originally meant to wrestle The Sandman on the show, this really was a surprise, but the fact that Holly made it to a PPV main event is surprising in itself.
