7 Notoriously Hated WWE Storylines (That Weren't Actually So Bad)
3. Perry Saturn & Moppy: A Love Story
Oh stop giving me those looks. I can't see them and they wouldn't change my opinion on this even if I could.
I understand that this gimmick essentially sunk Saturn's career because of how goofy and absurd the whole thing was, but how could you watch that man engage in a Tom Hanks/Wilson/Castaway situation on weekly television and not soak up every bewildering moment of it?
Let's set up the situation that led to this star-crossed romance, just in case you forgot. During a dark match with rookie Mike Bell, Saturn lost his cool and legitimately beat the hell out of the poor guy for bungling a maneuver. This led to a switch gimmick change which found Saturn as a brain-damaged fellow who dissed his flesh and blood girlfriend, Terri Runnels, for a mop.
Ahem.
Though the character change was obviously meant to kill his career, Saturn was always brilliantly weird in his segments. He was so good, in fact, that he managed to get over with the crowd in a huge way. The guy was never funnier.
A lot of fans hate this storyline in retrospect because of what it did for Saturn's career (and given the recent revelation that he has is dealing with a traumatic brain injury, it's maybe not so nice seeing him dropped on his head), but you have to be able to step back and appreciate this strange little time capsule for what it was.
