7 Reasons Biker Gimmick Was Nearly The Death Of The Undertaker

1. He Wasn't Trying Hard Enough In The Ring

Far be it from me to imply that Undertaker is a sub-par in-ring worker. The latter portion of his WrestleMania streak includes an outrageous run of consecutive classics, arguably stretching from Batista to CM Punk - a span of seven years. He's clearly a fantastic wrestling talent, and will be rightly regarded as an all-time great. However, it's hard to look past the fact that the majority of Undertaker's 'American Badass' matches were the wrong side of average. The problem wasn't just the in-ring work - which undoubtedly suffered a huge dip in quality - but the booking. Frequently, Undertaker would dominate his opponents to a ridiculous degree. His match with Kurt Angle at Fully Loaded 2000 was the worst example of this. Angle was riding an outrageous wave of momentum at the time, and would soon be booked to take Rock's WWF Championship from him. Undertaker threatened to kill that momentum dead, easily defeating Kurt in just over 5 minutes. The worst part of the match - and an infuriatingly frequent tendency of 'American Badass' Taker - was his insistence on breaking his own pinfalls. He arrogantly pulled Angle's shoulder off the mat on two separate occasions in this match, once after a spinebuster.
