7 Reasons Brock Lesnar Shouldn't Break CM Punk's Modern WWE World Championship Record
5. His Reign Has Damaged The Show
A lot of fans took umbrage with The Rock being the man to end CM Punk’s incredible WWE Championship run. That umbrage was understandable — The Rock was a part timer who picked up the title simply to lose it to John Cena at WrestleMania 29. Even typing that sentence encourages eyes to roll into the back of heads, but the thinking was clear. The title change happened to serve a logical story that made WWE a lot of money. That is the point of all this after all.
Where is the clear thinking for the end of Brock Lesnar’s championship reign? Roman Reigns isn’t exactly the world’s most popular pro wrestler, but there was a logic in him defeating Lesnar at WrestleMania 34 and taking the title forward. WWE had to swerve the fans at the Show of Shows instead, throwing everything out the window. The company even had a get-out clause at the Greatest Royal Rumble, but it managed to mess that up as well.
So who is there to beat Brock Lesnar? Is anybody hot enough to do it? Braun Strowman is one option, but Lesnar has beaten him in singles competition already. Seth Rollins? The Intercontinental Championship needs The Architect. Finn Bálor? Bobby Lashley? Kevin Owens? The Money in the Bank briefcase holder? None of the options encourage much in the way of optimism or continuity. Lesnar’s reign has been an unmitigated disaster the longer it has gone on, and CM Punk’s legacy deserves more than to be surpassed by such a calamity.
