7 Reasons Brock Lesnar Shouldn't Break CM Punk's Modern WWE World Championship Record

2. Nobody Has Benefited From His Reign

Long title reigns are supposed to benefit multiple people within a wrestling promotion. CM Punk’s reign did wonders for the man himself, but also helped many of his opponents. Punk helped reestablish Daniel Bryan as a top guy following his 18-second humiliation at WrestleMania XXVIII. Punk was a great babyface champion who made a believable challenger out of Dolph Ziggler, and a fantastic heel champion who displayed excellent fear in the face of Ryback.

Take a look at Okada’s current IWGP reign again. Kenny Omega became a megastar off the back of an unsuccessful challenge, while Katsuyori Shibata seemed like a made man after the same before injury intervened. EVIL, SANADA and Zack Sabre Jr. have also benefited from falling short in their attempts to dethrone The Rainmaker.

Who has benefited from Brock Lesnar’s lengthy WWE Universal Championship reign? Everyone he has defeated has come out of the match in need of rehabilitation, from Samoa Joe to Braun Strowman to Roman Reigns and the others (the ‘others’ in this case being Kane). Even Lesnar has become a bore. WWE is a couple of weeks away from a failure of a championship reign taking its place at the top of the modern listing.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
