7 Reasons NJPW Should Be Worried About 2017

5. A Stale Tag Division

This isn’t a new problem, but it is one that NJPW seems reluctant to address. For years now, both the heavyweight and the junior heavyweight tag divisions has been immensely stale, a conveyor belt of one or two challengers going through the motions in snoozers against uninspired champions. Bullet Club have dominated, and this hasn’t been the good kind of Bullet Club domination.

There is optimism, but a cursory glance at the tag division doesn’t inspire much more. There are thrown-together teams a plenty, and whilst the Guerrillas of Destiny have picked up their game over the last few months they still find themselves in a rather awkward three-way at Wrestle Kingdom.

NJPW sorely needs an injection of fresh talent into the tag ranks. The World Tag League offered hope in the shape of War Machine, and ACH and Ishimori were a welcome addition to the junior ranks in the second half of 2016. Stronger tag divisions would be a huge boon to the company.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
