7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1990

3. Ted Dibiase Was The Star Of The Rumble Match

When WWE fans think about the best wrestlers to never win a World Title they often bring up Ted Dibiase's name because he was an all around talent that could really do it all and was a true heel. He could talk, wrestle and he was a better actor than most too. At the 1990 Royal Rumble, he showed how great he was. There was a segment early in the show where Gene Okerlund suggested that Dibiase rigged the Rumble the year before (Dibiase finished second), so then it was revealed that Dibiase "randomly" drew the number one spot. That's some good booking. Dibiase started the match off with Koko B Ware, who is famous for being the most questionable Hall of Famer in WWE history. Dibiase eliminated four guys during the match while lasting 44:47, which was the longest duration in Rumble history at that point. He was also the main story of the match, at least in the first half of it. It was all about how crafty he was in terms of being able to stay in the match despite people going after him. Since he was one of the top heels in the match, it made sense that one of the biggest babyfaces would toss him out. When The Ultimate Warrior sent out Dibiase with a clothesline it drew a big reaction from the crowd. It was a great performance by Dibiase and further proof that he wasn't just a great character. He was an above average in-ring performer too.
