7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1991

5. The Rockers Match With The Orient Express Was Amazing

A great opening match can really set the tone for a three hour PPV like the Royal Rumble. In writing about past Rumble PPVs, they often times had such weak undercards that really hurt the crowd because it was so boring. Thankfully, things got better in 1991 because WWE decided to put on an athletic tag match between The Rockers and The Orient Express. The Rockers might be the best tag team in WWE that were never officially recognized as tag team champions. Most matches that Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty had were great. Any time they wrestled another athletic team like the Tanaka and Kato (Paul Diamond in a mask) it was so incredibly fun to watch. They had a 20 minute match that featured plenty of tags by both team, Michaels getting worked over for an extended period of time, dives all over the ring and a crowd that loved the majority of it. It ended with an elaborate sunset flip into a pin for Jannetty as the Rockers got the win to make the fans happy. Last summer when I wrote a piece about the best matches that opened a PPV, this match was on there. It's worth checking out if you haven't seen it a long time. It actually made it onto one of the many Shawn Michaels DVDs too, so that says a lot about what it meant to Shawn too.
