7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1996

6. Goldust Used Mind Games To Win The Intercontinental Title

Razor Ramon was an established Intercontinental Champion while Goldust was representative of a bit of a change in attitude in WWE at this point. He was the most bizarre character we had seen in WWE in a very long time. He played all kinds of mind games in the build to the match. The crowd hated him for it, but at the same time he was also a guy you had to keep your eye on. It was also the debut of Marlena as Goldust's "director." She was the real life wife of Goldust and later known as Terri Runnels in her WWE career. She wasn't announced with a name for this show, so Vince McMahon kept referring to her as "this woman" for much of the match. Their match wasn't that great. There was a lot of stalling by Goldust. It upset the crowd while Razor did his part in always fighting back. Goldust did have great wrestling skills, so he was a nice mix of talent. For the finish, Marlena faked an ankle injury to distract the ref. The 1-2-3 Kid snuck into the ring, jumped off the top rope and nailed Razor Ramon with a spinning heel kick. Goldust covered for the cheap win and his first Intercontinental Title. What we didn't know at the time was that Razor was going to debut in WCW four months later. Maybe WWE knew at the time, which is why he lost the title or perhaps it was simply because Goldust was on fire.
