Since the news broke regarding the impending Brand Split, there has been plenty of speculation among fans what that will mean for SmackDown's top title. There is always the option of having the WWE World Heavyweight champion defend on both brands, but as noted, WWE should attempt to keep the rosters as separate as possible.

SmackDown needs a championship for its wrestlers to vie for, and while slotting the Intercontinental Championship in that prominent position wouldn't be the worst case scenario, it would be better for the World Heavyweight Championship to return.

Yes, it has been a mere two and a half years since the two titles were merged at TLC 2013, but how else are up-and-coming athletes that are sent to SmackDown supposed to fulfill their full potential by becoming world champion? Waiting a year until they are possibly drafted to Raw seems slightly illogical.

If the Big Gold Belt is to make a comeback, it is incredibly important WWE ensures it doesn't become a prop again, as it did in the years preceding its ultimate retirement. That means not defending it in the opening slot of pay-per-view events and making it as equally prestigious as the WWE Championship (or whatever they decide to call it).
