7 Things We Learned From ESPN's WWE Special "Behind The Curtain"
6. Corey Graves Was Able To Overcome Bad News In His Career
The Corey Graves story was interesting because we got to see another side of him. He grew up as a fan of the wrestling business and then he pursued it. Even though he is not a big guy, he went after it, had a successful run in the indies and got that WWE deal. Graves is somebody that had a lot of potential in NXT, but unfortunately he kept getting hurt. After repeated concussions, there were serious doubt about his future. We also found out that Graves is married with two kids at the time of the filming two years ago. He and his wife had a third child recently as well. He's just a dad doing what he can to support his family. After he was told he couldn't wrestle anymore due to concussions, he had legitimate concerns about how he can provide for his family. Then it showed a clip from last year where Triple H went up to him and told him that WWE was signing him to a two year announcers contract. Graves called his wife, she was surprised about it, but very happy for him. Graves is very comfortable as an announcer. We know he's a diehard, lifelong wrestling fan that loves the business so it comes natural for him. He does great on NXT commentary as well as the Raw pre-show and PPV Kickoff broadcasts. There was a shot of Michael Cole instructing him as well, which again shows how much of a team effort is involved in everything WWE does. It was a feel good story because Graves career was at a major crossroads with him being unable to wrestle, so it's nice to see WWE giving him another opportunity. It makes Triple H look really good that they didn't give up on a guy that got injured.
