What made CM Punk "Hurt" ?

Episode 3 of the CM Punk documentary The Evolution of Punk has aired, this time showing Punk at a low point in his training after being injured. Entitled "Hurt" this third outing sees the tone change a little as a result - picking up from the high of his most successful sparring session to date and jumping straight into the disappointment of getting hurt right when things were seemingly moving in the right direction.

The episode also covers the release of Punk's Drax the Destroyer comic put out under the Marvel brand, and a day spent with a fan from the Make A Wish Foundation.

More so than the other two episodes of the series so far, Hurt gives us more insight into Punk's activities outside the cage rather than those in it - including his mental and emotional response to getting hurt when training was starting to go well. These are the moments that are actually some of the best of the episode, which is rather interesting given the whole documentary is supposed to be about Punk fighting.

So what did we learn from Hurt, the third episode of The Evolution of Punk? Lets take a look at seven key points from the penultimate episode of the series!

7. The Injury Made Punk Question Whether He Could Fight

In the intro to Hurt, Punk describes his injury as follows:

I was sparring and just heard a loud wet pop. My gut told me that the way it popped, the way it sounded and the way it felt, that I was going to need shoulder surgery. What the f*** does that do to the whole idea of me fighting?

The next time we see Punk in the episode, he's in physio therapy, rehabbing his shoulder. It's clear from that initial voice over, however, that Punk really had some doubt after getting hurt. He refers to trying to see the positives in all of it, but it's also clear that there aren't many. At most, he gets to give his body a rest.

At his age, such a setback couldn't have been easy. As Punk says, the rehab wasn't fun, and every day he wasn't in the gym at Roufusport, he was "losing daylight" as far as his development was concerned. Was this a career-ending injury before his career ever started?

In the end, no, but it seems there was doubt.
