7 Things We Learned From WWE's CWC Bracketology Show
Not much longer to cruiser-wait now...
Next week’s much-anticipated WWE Cruiserweight Classic is a bit of a step into the dark for the company. As a Brit, I’ve just about had my share of great "leaps into the dark” over the course of the past few weeks. But within the more comforting confines of pro wrestling, the change that is heralded by the CWC is a rather more welcoming one.
And the first step on this particular leap into the dark came last night when the WWE aired its Bracketology show—essentially the first of its kind—to hype the upcoming tournament.
In terms of the bigger picture, it’s very cool to see the WWE borrowing from the likes of the NBA and NFL and dabbling in a more legitimate form of presentation. But in the shorter, more immediate, term there was also a whole lot to take from the show with regards to what it means for the coming weeks and the CWC itself.
This article looks to recap some of the biggest talking points from the Bracketology show and discuss what they might mean for the tournament as a whole.
7. Kota Ibushi
His was the very first face that we saw on the Bracketology
intro package. Or at least, the first we saw following the obligatory Triple H
welcome speech…
And while it’s entirely possible that I’m reading too much into this, remember it’s the likes of John Cena and Roman Reigns who open the Raw and SmackDown video packages respectively.
Now, I’m certainly not saying Ibushi’s the CWC equivalent of John Cena—partly because that would be a ridiculous claim, and partly because of the chastising I’d get from wrestling purists—but placement seems to count for something here.
And to me, the positioning of Ibushi at the very top of the show further reinforces his tag as one of the favourites to win the tournament outright. That opening shot of Ibushi, with the CWC logo in the background, just seemed to be a clear allusion of things to come.
Either that or I’ve just been completely worked by the WWE’s production team…
