In recent years we've seen a number of big names in the WWE ring that aren't full time performers. Guys like The Undertaker, The Rock and the current WWE Champion Brock Lesnar all fit that description. Then there are former top guys like Batista, Chris Jericho and Rob Van Dam that come back for months at a time, work a regular schedule and then take another break because they might have something else going on. Some fans hate it. Others accept it. The reason it's done is because WWE has done a poor job of building up newer, younger stars in recent years. However, they are improving in that regarding. Guys like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Bray Wyatt are in the position where they are headlining live events regularly while also getting TV main event slots as well. While those young guys are on the rise, they need the bigger names to headline major shows a lot of the time. If you think back to the Attitude Era it's not like WWE needed part timers because they had full timers like Steve Austin, The Rock and The Undertaker headlining shows that were doing huge numbers. They don't have guys at that level right now, so they need the part time help. Some fans may not like the part timers, but until WWE can establish the full timers to become consistent draws they are going to keep doing it for as long as the part timers want to do it.
