7 Things WWE Fans Need To Know About Sting

4. His Crow Gimmick In 1997 WCW Was Fantastic

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKstznR-G3Q You would think that a guy that was known as an energetic babyface with an excitable personality wouldn't be able to completely overhaul his gimmick to become a dark brooding type, but Sting was able to do it. The 1997 version of Sting didn't do promos. He didn't even wrestle. The only thing he really did was repel down from the rafters and kick the New World Order's ass, much to the delight of WCW fans. I can remember watching in those days wondering why they wouldn't have Sting talk. He was a great promo guy. He could always get a crowd on his side, yet that year he just didn't talk. What was great about the angle is that it was exactly what WCW needed. When fans saw Sting they knew he wasn't there to talk. He was there to kick ass. Remember, this was at the same time as Steve Austin was becoming a babyface in WWE despite acting like a traditional heel. Fans didn't care about the traditional babyface as much. It was the era of the good guys that kicked ass and Sting fit that mold. Sting ended 1997 by defeating Hulk Hogan for the WCW World Title. As we've documented on here before, it was one of those easy things that WWE messed up by not giving Sting the clean win like they should have. The fans still loved everything he did that year and even though he didn't wrestle or talk much, he made a huge difference at a time when WCW really needed him.
