7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 2005

6. Edge And Shawn Michaels Had A Really Good Opening Match

It was weird seeing Shawn Michaels working the opening match with Edge just because Shawn was such a big star. Edge was an ascending star that was finding success as a heel after a few attempts at a push as a face. He really found the right role and going after a top face like Michaels was a good way for him to get booed by the fans. They had a very good back and forth match for nearly 20 minutes. By the time they got near the end of it, the crowd was popping big for everything. There was a beautiful superkick counter by Edge where he avoided it and turned it into an Electric Chair Drop for a two count. The Edgecution submission nearly won it for Edge too. The finish of the match was controversial. Michaels got a rollup for two. Edge was able grab the tights and then he turned it around into a pinning predicament of his own. Edge grabbed the ropes for the pinfall, which the ref didn't see and it was a cheap victory for the young Canadian over the veteran Michaels. Since they are two of the best wrestlers ever with dozens of matches better than this, people might not remember it very well. However, after watching it again it's a reminder that there are a lot of hidden gems on WWE PPVs from this era because the roster was so talented.
