7 Times Hulk Hogan Was An Awful Person In The Royal Rumble

7. Decapitating Tully Blanchard In 1989

Hulk Hogan made his first Royal Rumble appearance in the second edition of the match, which took place in 1989. Many fans misremember that Hogan came out on top, but The Hulkster was actually eliminated long before the finish. The Big Boss Man and Akeem combined to get rid of him, but more on that in a moment.

Before being eliminated, Hogan found time to almost decapitate Tully Blanchard in the match. Now it is obvious to everyone that this is a physical competition and injuries can happen, but the good guys in wrestling never stooped to actually trying to injure an opponent. That was the domain of dastardly heels - men such as Blanchard himself, and tag-partner Arn Anderson.

Hogan worked closely with the Brainbusters during the match, but he showed little regard for either man. At one point, The Hulkster lifted Blanchard up into a press slam position. Instead of dropping him down on the mat or eliminating him over the top rope, Hogan callously abandoned his hold of Tully and left him to fall neck first on the top rope. The crowd reacted with a slight sense of horror, and it is clear that Tully only just managed to avoid serious injury.

Was that the action of a good person or an absolute swine?

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
