Going into the 1989 Royal Rumble, ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage was on top of the world as the WWF Heavyweight Champion. It was clear that he was on a collision course with his partner in the Mega Powers, but it wasn’t clear just how Savage and Hogan were going to make it to ‘Mania. The seeds were planted here, as Hogan ‘inadvertently’ caused the elimination of Macho.

Moments after single-handedly eliminating Anderson and Blanchard with a comical clothesline and allowing The Warlord to set the record for shortest entry, Hogan ran over to lift Bad News Brown out of the ring. He did this with Macho’s precarious position in plain sight. Savage was wearing neon orange trunks after all, he couldn’t miss him. The two were supposed to be buddies, yet Hogan showed no remorse in dumping his friend.

Savage was irate. He ran back into the ring to point the finger at Hogan, only for Miss Elizabeth to run out and calm things down. To further show Hogan’s awful tendencies, it is Savage who eventually stretches out the hand of reconciliation. The Hulkster is hesitant to shake it, despite the situation being his fault entirely.

The Big Boss Man and Akeem were the next two entries, immediately creating a 2-on-1 situation. Hogan had no one to blame but himself.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
