7 Times It Sucked To Be Rey Mysterio

2. #FreeRey

After WrestleMania 30, Mysterio suffered an injury that took him out action for months. During that time, he asked for his release on multiple occasions but was denied. His contract was even extended, as WWE claimed he still owed them time.

In an effort to be released from his contract as well as build interest in a return to wrestling outside of WWE, the #FreeRey movement was started.

A video appeared at the end of AAA Triplemania XXII, in which Mysterio congratulated the company on over 20 years of success and also promised he would see the fans soon. A message including #FreeRey ended the package. It was a risky move considering the tempestuous relationship with his current employers.

The effectiveness of the movement couldn’t be accurately gauged - after WWE stated he was not released they eventually just allowed his contract to expire. Nevertheless, it highlighted a low point in Mysterio’s career. It represented a rare period of stasis in which he was being held back while wanting to move on.
