7 Times It Sucked To Be Rey Mysterio

The 2014 Royal Rumble wasn’t the only time Mysterio was booed out of an arena despite ostensibly expecting a babyface reaction. It also happened at ECW One Night Stand in 2006 when he defended the World Heavyweight Championship in match against Sabu.

Although it was mentioned that he was an ECW alumni, ‘The Master of the 619’ was still billed as a SmackDown superstar during the PPV, which placed him on the wrong side of the fence upon his return to the Hammerstein Ballroom. The fact that diehard fans didn’t associate him with the hardcore wrestling promotion as much as the 'Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal' challenger only made things worse. And the finish certainly didn’t help win the audience over either.

Fans were already there to cheer Sabu, so perhaps WWE felt stopping the match after the wrestlers crashed through a table was the best way to protect both competitors. They couldn’t have been more wrong.

What few fans still stood behind the champ soon turned coat and joined in for the most thunderous sound of rejection Mysterio had experienced in his WWE career. It's likely the jeers were directed towards the conclusion of the match, as Sabu, in particular, experienced much worst brutality regularly in his glory days with Heyman & Co. The scene marked yet another sad low for Rey's maiden reign.
