7 Times Wrestlers Recovered From A Burial
3. Chris Jericho (WrestleMania XVIII)
Chris Jericho may be the first ever Undisputed WWF Champion, but it’s not something he can brag about too much (although he does).
Winning the title at Vengeance 2001 in a match tainted by interference, Jericho’s credibility was shattered instantly due to the nature of his win. As for the reign...
Both of his notable defences (vs. The Rock and Steve Austin) were won through low blows and cheating. The icing on the cake was the manner in which Jericho was presented, being portrayed as Stephanie McMahon’s lapdog rather than a World Champion. After Triple H beat him in a fairly straightforward match at Wrestlemania XVIII, it seemed like Jericho was forever destined for the midcard.
Or was he?
Jericho did toil in the midcard for years before taking a two year hiatus, and when he came back he was no longer an arrogant rock star… he was the greatest damn wrestler in the world. Fans were given a pleasant surprise when Jericho was given the World Heavyweight Championship, and it was fresh to see Jericho back at the top of the card and being properly portrayed as champ.
It’s scary to think about what would have happened if Jericho hadn’t returned in 2007, as for the past decade he’s proven himself to be one of the best performers on the planet no matter the gimmick.
G.O.A.T indeed.
