“Whatcha gonna do when Hulk Hogan’s ego runs wild on you, brother?”

Become the greatest wrestler of all time, apparently.

Ask any old-school wrestling fan what the worst ever Wrestlemania is and they’ll all say Wrestlemania IX, and for good reason. The card was littered with irrelevant matches that no one cared for, as well as that Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzales match. The worst thing about the show, however, has to be the finish.

Bret Hart was the man in 1993. Having won the title from Ric Flair the previous year, he went into Wrestlemania IX as the ultimate face, and anyone who took him on would have been booed into oblivion.

Enter Yokozuna, a hulking monster weighing almost 600 pounds. Fresh off his 1993 Royal Rumble win, he was on a path of destruction and Bret Hart looked to be his next victim. At the end of a fairly boring match, Hart applied the Sharpshooter, only to have salt thrown into his eyes by Mr Fuji, Yoko’s manager. Yokozuna promptly pinned Hart and won the WWF Championship.

Now, this wouldn't have been so bad if they had left it here. It established Yokozuna as a monster heel, and gave lots of room for him to put over Hart in the future.

And then, Hulk Hogan came along.

Hogan entered the ring under the pretext of “wanting to check Hart’s condition”, but was soon offered an impromptu title bout against Yokozuna by Mr Fuji, which makes no sense because Yoko had just won it! As we all know, Hogan hit Yoko with his leg drop and pinned him in 22 seconds to win the title.

At the time, it seemed like Hart’s time in the spotlight was over, and there’s a good chance it would have been, had it not been for his unparalleled in-ring prowess. But as we all love to remember, Hart got his win over Yokozuna at the next year’s Wrestlemania, and him and Vince McMahon were best friends for the rest of their lives…

...right?
