Sometimes a wrestler may be on top of the mountain before they're injured, but upon returning, find themselves at the bottom of the card or completely lost in the shuffle. Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, Wade Barrett, and countless others found themselves inches away from the brass ring before being sidelined. Some never returned, but for many who did, they were sentenced to mid- or lower-card acts.

Such a fear existed for Bálor fans the night after he was crowned the first Universal Champion. In the determining match against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, ‘The Demon King’ suffered an injury during a running powerbomb into a ringside barricade, but he was able to pop his arm back into place for the duration of the bout and pick up the victory. However, the damage was done. The new champ was going to needed surgery.

As he was expected to be out of action for four-to-six months, ‘The Extraordinary Man’ took to the ring to hand over the big red belt he had just won. While it was logical that an injured champion would vacate the title, fans wondered whether he would ever reclaim his gold again - or if he would join the list of other superstars who were never the same after missing time in the ring.
