7 Times WWE Sold Out Its Fans

6. Reinstating Hulk Hogan

Flash forward to the modern day now and not much has changed, in fact the underlying nuance for this one is far worse. In 2015, we saw the biggest forced disappearance in WWE history as Hulk Hogan was Thanos’d away from all record and history books.

The Gawker tape scandal was one of the ugliest moments in pro wrestling, where one of its quintessential greats was shown using the N word in a derogatory context against African American individuals. However as is often is the case in WWE, there is no such thing as a permanent blacklist.

Cue 2018 and Real American resonates through a WWE arena once more. This opened up numerous cans of worms, most significant of which was Hogan’s apparent reluctance to own up to his own misdeeds. Most will agree there was never a proper apology and admission of guilt, and his attempts at addressing the black members of the roster, as later pointed out by Big E, were less than satisfactory.

The crowd reactions greeting him upon his return was mixed, to say the least. People did not know whether to applaud or boo; most just looked on perplexed. For most of the black audience, it was another case of a powerful and important someone being excused for harbouring discriminatory biases against them. Coming from a company priding itself on promoting inclusivity in 2019, it was a kick in the teeth for many of its fans. But hey, whatchya gonna do?

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
