7 Traps WWE’s Brand Extension Has Fallen Into (Again)
6. Diluted World Title Picture
WWE made the decision to unify the WWE Title and World Heavyweight Championship back at TLC 2013. Although this meant that the company only had one 'World Title' for the first time since 2002, it hasn't taken WWE long to go back to the idea of presenting two top championships, one for each major show.
The actual naming of the WWE Universal Title was panned by many on social media, but the title has provided highlights on pay-per-view. Mainly, that's down to the fact that Kevin Owens has been a riot in his role as the deluded heel champion; KO has had awesome matches with the likes of Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, even pulling something worthwhile from Braun Strowman recently too.
Despite the effort Owens has put forth, it still seems forced to have more than one World Title in your promotion. Which one is most important, the one on Monday nights or the one fans see each Tuesday?
This was a problem back during the first brand extension too, and it's hard to ignore the fact WWE are trying to portray a new title as immediately comparable to one they've spent years telling us is the most important.
