7 Ups & 0 Downs From WWE SmackDown (Sep 10)
3. The Injury Angle
Then, this majestic excuse to write Edge off TV until the pay-per-view.
WWE tend to overdo the sunken, hushed tones whenever somebody is injured. Michael Cole is one of the worst for this, because he seems to think that every injury angle must be accompanied by whispering and disconsolate tones. It's fine sometimes, to be fair, and he is only doing as instructed.
The best thing about Edge getting wheeled out to an ambulance here is that WWE didn't actually overdo it. No, they showed remarkable (and uncharacteristic) restraint by having Rollins blast his foe with three superkicks and then a deadly stomp. That, if you'd been paying attention, was something both built as a potential career-ender for the legend.
Now, smartly, they've got Edge's Con-Chair-To to use on the pay-per-view as ultimate revenge for this neck damage. Job done. People got to see a hot match play out to a conclusion, then the heel ended the night on top and even questioned his own violence.
