7 Ups & 1 Down From IMPACT Wrestling (16 Sep)
2. Petey Gets Past TJP
This entire TJP/Petey Williams saga, which this week also involved TJP embarrassingly attempting to look cool in Swinger's Palace, has been entirely mundane up to this stage. Their match on last night's IMPACT, however, was a grand affair that was as engaging an X Division fight as you'd anticipate.
There was no singular control early on. It was an even technical bout that saw both former X Division Champions scampering for the advantage before transitioning into the greatest hits of both athletes. TJP's headstand headscissors was met by Williams' slick slingshot Codebreaker. As the match progressed, the match got a tad personal, as TJP attempted Petey's patented Canadian Destroyer. It was a neat touch to turn a dire story into a tantalising contest that was won by Petey Williams with a surprise rollup.
It was important for TJP and Petey to share a nod of respect post-match, signalling the culmination of their beef together. Cue a Steve Maclin run-in, as he laid out both guys to set up a three-way contest for Victory Road. That will officially end this storyline.
The match was sublime. It perfectly blended the technical and cruiserweight styles of professional wrestling without either man overpowering each other. The aftermath worked because you needed a natural transition into Victory Road's three-way. It's basic, but it works all the more.
