7 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (June 5 - Results & Review)
1. Chris Jericho Remains At Large
Chris Jericho, who continued his zombie shuffle of an AEW run, was followed around the arena by a camera crew throughout the show.
In the running gag, Jericho, with a new ultra over-the-top disingenuous happy guy voice, offered his advice on virtually everything. He told the camera operator how to hold their equipment and even told somebody how to correctly fill their bowl in catering. That might have scanned as funny in 2020. That Jericho thought somebody would even need to learn how to do this is the sort of irreverent gag at which AEW once excelled. But this version of Chris Jericho is awful and unwanted.
He was flanked by Learning Tree "branches" Big Bill and Bryan Keith. Bill is wasted in this role - he was infinitely funnier when he got weird with it during his in-ring heat sequences - and Keith isn't crazed nor intense enough to play the hothead bad cop gimmick. He lacks the comedic timing, too. It's almost as if he's been shoehorned into something that doesn't suit him because Jericho thinks it will do him good. We've been here before, and it derailed a man's promising career. This is death. Jericho's new voice is a physical agony. He is a cartoon worse than new Simpsons.
But it's working, guys! You're supposed to hate it! You're not meant to enjoy yourself!
