7 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Rampage: New Year's Smash (Dec 30)

4. Paul Wight’s Commentary

You might be surprised to see this here.

Everyone loves JR, but he wasn't missed this week. The one-time Big Show did a cool job of stepping in for him, and Paul Wight can look back proudly on his work alongside both Excalibur and Tony Schiavone. Being honest, yours truly doesn't watch much 'C' show stuff like Dark or Dark: Elevation, so he couldn't say whether or not Paul has improved as an announcer since joining AEW.

He was on top form during Rampage, to be fair. The big man added crucial insight to the opener and main event alike, and he made sure to bring up various story beats when relevant. If anything, Wight was the one who did most of the heavy lifting for Kip Sabian's guest spot, not Excalibur or Schiavone.

If AEW fancies mixing things up a bit on Fridays, they could do a lot worse than by showing some faith in Wight. It'd be interesting to see what he'd be like as a double act with Excalibur, or maybe even alongside Schiavone as a tandem.
