7 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE Elimination Chamber 2025

2. SHUT UP, MCAFEE!

Much of what WWE served up on Saturday night at Elimination Chamber was a rousing success, but one thread throughout the evening that dragged the proceedings down was one-third of their announce desk.

Pat McAfee does have his moments here and there, but by and large, he’s borderline insufferable on commentary. Saturday was one of his more annoying performances. He could not get past the fact that the Canadian fans booed the American national anthem, something that wrestling fans have done forever – booing foreign anthems. Yes, there are some geopolitical factors at play these days, but McAfee came back to this point three times during the show.

He also kept running his mouth at inopportune moments, none worse than right after Cody Rhodes told The Rock what he could do with his “sell your soul” offer. McAfee started yelling about Cody’s profanity, Travis Scott lighting up a blunt, and generally just bellowing over the crowd reaction. It was obnoxious, and it wouldn’t be surprising if WWE mutes that in future reproductions of the moment.

WWE clearly loves the guy, and he’s quite obviously a fan of wrestling, but the value added is nil for many fans.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fondly remembers watching WrestleMania III, IV, V and VI and Saturday Night's Main Event, came back to wrestling during the Attitude Era, and has been a consumer of sports entertainment since then. He's written for WhatCulture for more than a decade, establishing the Ups and Downs articles for WWE Raw and WWE PPVs/PLEs and composing pieces on a variety of topics.
